I was asked by a few people to show how I diy-ed the necklace I wore earlier in the week. Well, I plan on doing just that! Keep reading to see how I created the beaded beauty.

I bought the necklace a few months ago at Forever 21. It was just 4 separate strands of orange beads alternated with a section of gold chain. Pretty simple.

When I first hung it up on my jewelry bulletin board, it got a little bit tangled, but I was able to fix it before putting it on. However, the knots that formed throughout the day while sporting it were not so easily dissolved.

It ended up in many different hands, with many pins poked at it, and in the end, it was cut (without my knowledge!). By the time I got it back to me, I had 4 strands- but two of them were not continuous...they suffered the big cut. It made me a little bit sad to look at the broken piece, but I put it on hoping to get some kind of vision. (Note: When re-trying it on, one more strand ripped!) Well, not only did I get a vision, I got a new necklace!

I draped the still-circular pieces in a way so that there were loops on both ends with both strings. I took the cut pieces and draped them on top of the others in a way I liked.
Then, I took two safety pins (this was very temporary, I would suggest at least using a teensy gold safety pin instead of the bent and large ones I used.) and pinned each side, putting the pin through the actual beads as anchor.

I hooked a thin gold chain onto each pin to connect the necklace, and tried it on. My hair covered most of the pin, but it wasn't good enough for me. I remembered the jade and pearl clip on earrings sitting in my jewelry corner, so I clipped one on top of each pin! It was the perfect solution- the jade green is perfect with the orange and gold!

At this point, after playing around with it so much, the beads got themselves a tad tangled. I hung it on my door knob to easily restyle it, you can use any other clever method to simply detangle!

Finito!

I left mine a little tangled, I love how it looks all twisted and asymmetrical!

Try it yourself with some left over beads or a necklace you wouldn't mind re-crafting. Can't wait to see your results!

  1. I really really like the outcome. The process was not at all what I had guessed it to be. So now I will head over to forever to seek inspiration! :)
